I rooted the Nook Glowligth 7.8 a few years ago but after doing a factory reset I could not avoid the update software screen. After the software update to the last version 5.5 I could not connect to the Barns & Noble account and was blocked in the set up connect screen. And there is no way to bypass the registration set up process on this device, so the Nook Glowlight 7.8 BRVN700 in this state is useless. I tried everything from hard reseting with power button and Nook button, creating a new account in the Barnes & Noble website and then try to register again but it did not work and the message that there is a network problem prompts each time.
I have learned since then that Barnes & Noble stopped giving support to this device since June 2024 and you cannot connect to their servers with it, which is too bad for such a nice reader, water proof and magnific ink screen, what do they want us to do with it? It is such waste to not be able to use such a good device.
So after many trials I though; hey maybe they did not block creating a new account with it because of comercial reason. So from the device itself I registered a new account, they asked credit card details which I skipped, of course. And boom! No I can use my Nook Glowlight 7.8 again!
So if you cannot connect with your existing Barnes&Noble account after update and cannot bypass set up and registration, then you CAN if you register by creating a NEW account with another email on the reader. Remember to do it from the device not the computer.
Installing Android apps with adb
Then next thing I wanted to do was to install some apps which allow to use the Nook even more, like KOReader to be able to read all e-books format, a file browser and even a chess game. So here is how you do it, first install adb in your computer and then:
Connect the NOOK to your computer and type:
adb devices
List of devices attached
XXXXXXX unauthorized
XXXXXXX is your serial device number and here is unauthorized. This means you need to allow debugging. To do so make sure you disconnect storage from computer.
Unplug the USB, plug it back in, in NOOK settings click on About, then click quickly on Nook logo, then click on ALLOW DEBUGING, check on my previous post on how to get to the configuration settings and debug mode: https://storiesofmaria.blogspot.com/2024/02/how-to-root-nook-glowlight-plus-78.html
Back in the command prompt, type adb devices again. This time it should see the device and simply say "device" where it used to say "unauthorized". Congratulations! You will see:
XXXXXXX device
That is good news!
Then to install apps you type:
adb install E-Ink-Launcher-v0.1.8.2_einkcn.com.apk

How to install fonts on KOReader
To add custom fonts to KOReader, you must copy the font files in the .ttf (TrueType) or .otf (OpenType) format into your device's koreader/fonts directory. If this folder does not exist, you must create it manually before transferring the files. A nice reading font is Bookerly.

Conclusion: do not buy Barnes & Noble, Kindle or any other books shop devices
Also Amazon has deprecated many of their Kindle readers devices to force you buy their new products, so be free from unfair obsolescense policies and buy a Boox Go for example which is independent and with Android you can install Amazon Kindle on it if you want.
